Terms of Service

Last updated: 30 July 2026

Overview

Welcome to The Lantern Society. In these Terms, "we," "us," and "our" refer to The Lantern Society, operated by L.J. Black. "You" refers to you, the customer. These Terms of Service, together with our Privacy Policy, Refund Policy, and Cancellation Policy, set out the basis on which you may use our website and subscribe to our service.

Please read these Terms carefully before subscribing. By using our website or placing an order, you agree to be bound by these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

Nothing in these Terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and other applicable UK law. Where anything in these Terms conflicts with those rights, your statutory rights prevail.

1. Using our site

By subscribing, you confirm that you are at least 18 years old. You agree to provide accurate, current, and complete information when you order, and to keep your account details up to date so we can fulfil your order and contact you when needed. You are responsible for keeping your account details secure.

2. Our products

The Lantern Society is a subscription mail club: illustrated letters and keepsake items prepared by hand and sent to you by post. Each item is made to order and personalised.

We have taken care to represent our products accurately, but colours and finishes may appear differently on your screen depending on your device. Because our items are handmade, small natural variations are part of their character and are not faults.

We may change or discontinue products, and update descriptions, at any time.

3. Orders

When you subscribe or place an order, you are making an offer to purchase. Your order is accepted, and a contract is formed, when we confirm acceptance by email. We may decline an order at our discretion — for example, if we cannot take payment or fulfil the request — and if we do, we will contact you using the details you provided.

Because our items are personalised and made to order, we may be unable to change or cancel an order once it has been accepted and preparation has begun. Please review your order carefully before submitting it. Your rights to cancel are set out in Section 5 and in our Cancellation and Refund policies.

4. Subscription, billing, and renewal

The Lantern Society is a recurring subscription. By subscribing, you agree to the following:

  • What you're signing up for: a recurring subscription to illustrated letters and keepsake items, prepared by hand and sent to you by post.

  • Price and cycle: your subscription price and billing frequency are shown clearly at checkout and confirmed in your order confirmation email. Your first payment is taken when you subscribe.

  • Automatic renewal: your subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period, and payment for the next period is taken on your renewal date, unless you cancel before then. We make the price, billing frequency, and automatic renewal clear before you subscribe.

  • Cancellation: you can cancel at any time. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period — you will continue to receive what you have already paid for up to that date, and you will not be charged again. Full details are in our Cancellation Policy.

  • Price changes: if we change the subscription price, we will give you advance notice by email before your next renewal, so you can decide whether to continue or cancel before the new price applies.

  • Failed payments: if a renewal payment fails, we may pause your subscription until payment is resolved, and we will contact you.

Prices, discounts, and promotions may change, but any change will not affect an order already accepted. The price you pay is the one shown at checkout and confirmed by email.

5. Your right to cancel (cooling-off) and made-to-order items

Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, consumers usually have a 14-day cooling-off period to cancel an order. However, this right does not apply to goods that are made to your specification or clearly personalised. Because each item we make is personalised and prepared to order, once we have begun preparing your item it is exempt from the standard 14-day change-of-mind cancellation.

This does not affect your rights if an item arrives damaged or faulty — see Section 6 and our Refund Policy.

Your right to cancel the ongoing subscription (as opposed to an individual made-to-order item) is always available as set out in Section 4 and our Cancellation Policy.

6. Faulty or damaged items

If your item arrives damaged, or is faulty or not as described, please contact us at hello@lanternsociety.co.uk within 14 days of receiving it. We will put it right — a replacement, or a refund where appropriate — in line with your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and our Refund Policy.

7. Prices and payment

Payment is taken through our payment providers. We do not store your full card details. You confirm that you are authorised to use the payment method you provide, and that the details are accurate.

Unless stated otherwise, prices are in pounds sterling. If you order from outside the UK, you may be responsible for any local customs, import duties, or taxes — please check before ordering, as these are outside our control.

8. Shipping and delivery

We send items by post and aim to dispatch within the timescales set out in our Shipping Policy. Delivery times are estimates and are not guaranteed, and we are not responsible for delays caused by postal carriers or customs once an item has left us. Details, including international shipping, are in our Shipping Policy.

9. Intellectual property

All content on our site and in our products — including illustrations, artwork, text, designs, the name "The Lantern Society," and associated logos and branding — is owned by L.J. Black or used under licence, and is protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws.

Your subscription is for your own personal, non-commercial use. You may enjoy and keep the items you receive, but you may not reproduce, copy, resell, distribute, or create derivative works from our artwork or content, or use our name or branding, without our prior written permission. All rights not expressly granted are reserved.

10. Acceptable use

You agree to use our site lawfully, and not to: use it for any unlawful or harmful purpose; infringe our intellectual property or anyone else's; harass or abuse us or others; transmit viruses or malicious code; attempt to gain unauthorised access to, disrupt, or scrape the site; or impersonate anyone. We may suspend or end your access if you breach these Terms.

11. Feedback

If you send us feedback, suggestions, or ideas, you agree that we may use them freely to improve our products and service without any obligation to you. You confirm that any feedback you send is your own to give. We are not obliged to keep feedback confidential, to pay for it, or to act on it.

12. Our responsibility to you

We take care to provide our service and products as described. If we fail to meet our obligations, we are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breach — but we are not responsible for loss or damage that is not foreseeable.

We do not exclude or limit our liability where it would be unlawful to do so. This includes liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for any breach of your statutory rights as a consumer that cannot be excluded under UK law.

Because we supply to consumers for personal use, we are not liable for business losses (such as loss of profit or business interruption).

Nothing in this section takes away your statutory rights.

13. Your responsibility

You are responsible for your own use of the site. If you use the site unlawfully or in breach of these Terms and that causes a third party to bring a claim against us as a direct result, you are responsible for that claim to the extent it arises from your own unlawful conduct or breach. This does not apply to anything caused by our own actions, and nothing here affects your rights as a consumer.

14. Errors

Occasionally the site may contain typographical errors or inaccuracies in descriptions, pricing, or availability. We may correct these and update or cancel affected orders, even after an order is submitted, if the information was wrong. If we cancel an order you have paid for because of a genuine error, we will refund you in full.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. The current version is always on this page, with the "Last updated" date. If we make material changes, we will give you reasonable notice — for subscribers, by email — and continued use or subscription after the change means you accept the updated Terms.

16. Termination

You may end your subscription at any time as set out in Section 4. We may suspend or end your access if you seriously or repeatedly breach these Terms. If we do, you remain liable for any amounts already due, and the sections that by their nature should continue — intellectual property, feedback, our responsibility to you, and governing law — will continue to apply.

17. General

If any part of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest remains in force. If we do not enforce a right straight away, that is not a waiver of it. These Terms are the entire agreement between you and us regarding your use of the service. You may not transfer your subscription or account to anyone else without our agreement.

18. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the law of Scotland, and any disputes will be subject to the jurisdiction of the Scottish courts. If you live elsewhere in the UK, you may bring proceedings in your own jurisdiction; nothing here removes consumer-protection rights available to you locally.

19. Contact

Questions about these Terms can be sent to us at hello@lanternsociety.co.uk Our service is operated by L.J. Black, trading as The Lantern Society.
